Active Drinking Games: Get Moving Instead of Sitting Down

Freunde spielen ein aktives Trinkspiel mit Tanz und Bewegung drinnen

Not every drinking game happens sitting down — once dance, skill or balance come into play, a quiet evening turns into an action-packed party. Active drinking games get the group moving, lift the energy and make sure nobody's glued to the sofa by round three. This list focuses on movement games that work indoors too, each with full rules.

What is an active drinking game? A drinking game where movement, dance or physical skill is part of the core mechanic — as opposed to sit-down question or card games. Active drinking games are a great fit whenever the mood needs an energy boost.

💡 By the way: that's exactly why we built the SwigSki3000® — four people, one ski, one shot in sync. More on that below ↓

Active Drinking Games: Dance and Movement

Dance battle with drinking rules

Each person dances for about 30 seconds to a song of their choice or a random pick, while the rest of the group watches and scores them from 1 to 10 — by hand signal or shouted out loud. Whoever gets the lowest score takes a drink. If there's a tie, the people involved dance a tiebreaker against each other until the group crowns a loser.

Limbo drinking game

Two people hold a pole, a broom handle or a taut rope at hip height. Taking turns, everyone tries to move underneath it back-first, without touching it or falling over. After every successful round, the pole is held a little lower. Whoever touches the pole or falls over drinks and is out for the current round — until only one person is left.

Musical chairs drinking game

Like classic musical chairs: set up chairs in a circle, always one fewer than the number of players. Music plays, everyone walks around the circle, the music stops and everyone scrambles for a chair. Whoever doesn't get one drinks instead of being eliminated — and so stays in the game until the end, instead of getting knocked out like in the original. That way, the whole group ends up drinking.

Balloon challenge

Everyone gets an inflated balloon and has to keep it in the air non-stop — hands only, without letting it touch the ground. Handicaps get added round by round: head only, elbows only, spinning once on the spot. Whoever's balloon touches the ground drinks and gets handed a second balloon.

Handy side effect: because the SwigSki3000® is made of four individually removable modules, after the round it just goes straight into the dishwasher instead of gathering dust in a corner.

Physical Drinking Games for Indoors

Drunk Jenga (wobbly tower with shots)

Before you start, write a task or a number of sips on every block of a Jenga tower ("2 sips", "one squat per player", "give away 3"). Taking turns, everyone pulls a block without knocking the tower over, reads out the task and does it. Whoever brings the tower down drinks the rest of their glass in one go — the tension builds every round as the tower gets more and more wobbly.

Table tennis drinking game

A cup sits in the middle of each side of the table tennis table. Two or four players play regular table tennis by the normal rules, with the extra goal of hitting the opponent's cup. If they land it, the opponent (or the opposing team) has to drink. Knock over your own cup by accident and you drink instead — one of the more precise physical drinking games on this list.

Flip Cup (team relay)

Two teams line up facing each other on opposite sides of the table, each player with a cup holding one sip. On "go", the first person drinks their cup empty and then tries to flick it off the table edge so it lands upside down and stays put. Only once that works can the next person on the team start. Whichever team finishes first wins — pure chaos and team spirit.

Twister (drinking edition)

The classic body-twister as a drinking game: a spinner (or the Mini-Ski-Roulette used as a spin board) decides which hand or foot goes on which colour. Everyone knots themselves up on the mat at the same time, and whoever falls over or can't hold a position any longer drinks a sip and is out for the round. Whoever's still standing (or, more likely, lying down) last wins. Brings movement, physical contact and plenty of laughs to a group.

Buzz wire with a handicap

A repurposed skill game: a ring has to travel along a bent wire without touching it — every slip costs a sip. As a step-up, run the wire with your weaker hand or standing on one leg after every successful round. A calmer but surprisingly demanding movement game for in between rounds.

Reaction duel (hand-slap game)

Two people stand facing each other, hands held flat out in front. One places their hands under the other's and tries to slap the back of their opponent's hands before they can pull away. Whoever gets slapped, or flinches for no reason, drinks. Fast, loud and perfect as a short energy boost whenever the group needs one.

Tips for Fun Active Drinking Games

  • Build in breaks: movement plus alcohol wears people out faster — drink water regularly.
  • Clear the space first: get trip hazards and breakable items out of the way.
  • Watch people's balance: anyone visibly unsteady on their feet should sit out the movement games.
